Sent away...

Sent off the application to one international school in Kenya. The application itself was like a mini interview asking me questions like:

  • Why do you feel called to be a teacher?
  • Describe your professional growth in the past 2 years.
  • Why are you interested in teaching at ________ School?
  • What positive qualities do you bring to our school? What extra curriculars would you be willing to get involved with?
  • Describe your personal and professional goals in the next five years.
  • Describe a typical lesson plan format you might use.
  • How do you assess student learning?

This application took quite a bit of time to write an perfect. There were only about 10 typed lines per answer so every word had to count.

Now its a matter of waiting to see if I managed to get an interview.

In the mean time this semester of school wraps up. D & I will be heading to Edmonton for a weeks time to visit his family. After that we come back to the Ok area to spend Christmas with my family. School starts up again the first week of January but instead of sitting in classes taking notes I'll be the one teaching. I am in a grade 4/5 class at a school some might describe as 'inner city'.

Projects & Applications

I started off with 33 at the beginning of the semester and am now down to seven. Seven over the next ten days of school. Hard to believe in ten days the university classes part of my life will be finished (well for now anyways). D has been so good to me. I feel quite stressed out because of the lack of sleep and mental exhaustion of plowing through these remaining projects.

I will be sending off applications throughout this upcoming week. Some of them have been quite intense having mini interview like questions that have required quite a bit of time to formulate the best answers. Other applications only require a cover letter and resume.

If I get accepted into one of the schools it would mean I would have to leave for Africa in mid July at the latest. So we will see what happens.

Changes and Transistions

This blog will be undergoing a state of construction over the next few days. It will be semi replaced with something better and more current to our current life situation right now.

Why?

The blog that was here before talked about life before the wedding and was occasionally updated afterward to let you know about the goings on in our lives. Now things are changing in full force.

I am starting down a path of many 'first of the last's. The biggest of which being university. School for me is drawing to a close in April (after only about 7 years of it including a couple year offs and part time years throughout that time too). I am currently in my last semester of school with only 12 projects left to go (at the beginning of September it was 33!), my last practicum is just around the corner starting in January and finishing in March and the entire program concluding with a mini research project presented in front of a panel of judges. Then I will have my degree and be a certified elementary school teacher!

The other bunch of firsts include applying for a job. With the job situation here in the valley being as it is (50 job openings and 3500 applicants for those jobs) I am currently applying to international schools around Africa. There is no word yet as to what will be happening next year but as we find out we'll blog about it on here.

Summer in a nutshell

Whoa summer has just flown by. Hard to believe September is approaching it's end already, the summer months have just flown by at rapid speed.

What happened this summer? Summer started for me at the end of April so we'll start from there.

April
Practicum #1 finished for me
We moved to our new place
I got a job as a nanny (it was temporary and lasted for only 2 weeks)

May
Hung out with Daniels family over Mothers day weekend
Roadtrip to Rossland BC
Went to Seattle with my family for the folk festival

June
Daniel got a job as a reporter/photographer at the online news agency in town
Melissa came back from Europe & we got to drive home together from Vancouver
Melissa graduated from University!
Nick graduated from High school

July
I went to Calgary for two weeks for an Orff music and movement class (Daniel stayed back home)
One of Daniel's grooms dudes got married in Ed so we went there for the wedding
Family reunion-got to hang out with all the cousins and sleep at the cabin with all the cousins. It was awesome!
Daniel's family was here for the fest-we saw them a few times

August
Vince and Karla came to visit
Cabin week at the cabin
Krista got married
Went to last week of the bible course in Chilliwack
Opa B passed away

September
Opa B's funeral
School started

Overall it was a very full summer. I loved all the time spent with family including all my siblings, the parents, all the grandparents and cousins. I will treasure this time close to my heart. Though the summer seemed to end of on a sad note with Opa B leaving this world to enter the next, the family time right after the funeral was sweet and beautiful. I miss Opa B of course and am still grieving but know I'll see him again...

Update on our lives

Today I just registered for my last year of school. The last year of many years. With my younger sister having graduated as a Civil engineer a few weeks ago, I have to admit I am slightly envious. I have learned alot this past year in school especially during my practicum, don't get me wrong, I do enjoy school especially now since it is directly related to what I want to do with my life, but, I am ready to get started on the next chapter of life.

I will talk more about my practicum experience as well as school another time.

In other news Daniel got a part-time job with the local online news site here in Kelowna. He is happily writing, reporting, photographing and updating almost every weekend. I am very excited he is back in a news room. Only drawback is the police scanner is on more often then before and it accompanies him everywhere! One day I will learn to love it right?

Oh can't forget one last tidbit-we moved. We have gone up a step in life from basement suite to a ground level suite. The place is surrounded by orchards and alot closer to the university. The landlords are sweet and quite friendly as well which is an added bonus. We are still trying to organize the place but on a related note, we have done well with our goal to downsize. We are having a garage sale this weekend at my parents to get rid of a bunch of our stuff. We'll see how it turns out.

That's all I can think of for now. Stay tuned. I know I have been really bad about updating this blog but I will get better.
